What Praise Means

A friend and a client wrote to me today:

I have been meaning to let you know how much I enjoyed your book. I read it over the weekend after securing my” autographed” copy in your office the Friday before the book fair downtown. I am wondering when we can expect the next book. I am willing to make a down payment to get a hint what is in the ***** jar. Looks like you maybe the new sheriff in town when it comes to exciting new authors.

I wish I could express to readers what sustenance this is to a new author. Writing is lonely and rejection is common. Still, while it has not always been this way because I have only been writing for about three years, a day without writing is not full. By the way, the third book in the Cloe series addresses what’s in the ***** jar.

What does praise mean to other new authors? How do you react to negative comments?
